What exactly does a gymkhana consist of?

Sarah T asked:

There’s going to be one at my barn on Saturday (next) and my instructor asked me to be one of the ‘attending riders’ on my own horse… I pretty much just supervise the events, but on horseback. I don’t EXACTLY know what is done in a gymkhana though… Could anyone tell me?
ADD:

Yeah, english style.. I don’t think we’ll be doing any wastern things like the keyhole etc. …
ADD ADD:

I’m going to call him tomorrow if I don’t see him when I’m at the barn for sure, I was just wondering.

He said he wanted me to do some example runs of the ‘games’ so I dunno what to expect… It’s my first gymkhana… =P

It is a timed obstacle racing horse event as in barrel racing and pole bending. at least those were the events back in my day. I remember it as lots of fun. I am sure they have added lots of events over the years. Enter whatever your instructor feels you are ready for you will have lots of fun.

Ive never done it, it isnt really popular around here, but isnt it gaming?

Ask your trainer what it consists of. If you are just supervising, it would prolly be helping set stuff up, maybe catch lose ponies? I don’t know for sure.

EDIT: Or maybe it isnt gaming. Where I live the two mean one and the same….. Course, like I said, it isnt big here.
    Id still ask your trainer.

It could be any type of games the organizer thinks of, including those that are typically thought of as western games. Most are pretty simple and easy to learn. Check out the rule book for Pony Club Games on for a list and directions on how to play a whole bunch of mounted games played by english riders. There’s no guarantee that any of them will be played at your barn, but it might give you an idea of some possibilities.

Never heard of an “English” Gymkhana. Typically, gymkhana is more of a “playday” version of a rodeo. There are more “game type” events, including pole bending, keyhole, rescue ride, etc., and there are also the more traditional rodeo events like barrel racing.
