A M asked:
I have to give a lesson to a group of 8-12 yr. old Pony Clubbers about proper attire for horseback riding. I also have to teach what informal and formal attire means in Pony Club. How can I make this fun?

when you talk about an item of clothing, let them guess why it is used…beginning with boots and ending with a helmet/hat. You might even assign a certain number of points for right answers and have a nice “pony prize” for the winner. You could also do a couple of posters, showing informal and formal attire…again, explaining why the difference and make the poster for the informal like an everyday type of thing, and the formal attire poster like a prom kind of thing. You can explain that when you show and wear formal attire, you are only riding in a show ring and don’t need things like “half chaps” etc
Just an idea….you could also have a pony clubber dress one way, and one dress the other to demonstrate the difference.
You could have three suitcases and put a different set of clothing in each one, such as:
1. Inappropriate riding attire: flip flop sandals, a straw hat, bermuda shorts, a tank top, etc.
2. Informal riding attire: jeans, t-shirt, helmet, etc.
3. Formal riding attire: helmet, breeches, coat, etc.
You could ask three volunteers to help you by dressing in these clothes to help illustrate your point. Make sure the clothes are large enough that the kids can just slip them on over their normal clothes, and just dress quickly to show what they look like.
Then ask the group a few questions regarding the pros and cons. Such as:
1. Yes, the flip flops are comfortable, but not if a horse steps on your foot.
2. The straw hat might make you feel like a cowboy, but if you land on your head, you’ll be feeling a lot worse.
3. The jeans and t shirt are good for schooling and practice, but if you were a judge would those clothes look nice at the show?
4. The bermuda shorts would not feel good at all, if you were riding a horse and they got all bunched up and your legs got rubbed raw by the saddle.
You could also show some enlarged photos or a poster of the examples of informal and formal attire. Ask the kids to point out things from each one, or any observations they have.
If you made some sort of game of it also, or a quiz over what you’ve taught, it would be more fun. Good luck.
Become the Pony Club “fashioneista” have a show!! A catwalk with the girls wearing all the styles of attire.
I gave this same lecture to the local pony club last year and we did two different activities:
Get a LOT of magazines and catalogs that the kids can ruin. Draw a “person” on a sheet of paper and make lots of copies. Give eack kid three “persons” and have them cut out items from the magazines and glue them on to the persons to make a “formal” attire, “informal” attire and “unsafe” attire.
Bring in several bags of children’s sized riding clothes. In each bag have a complete formal outfit and informal outfit. Have the kids get into groups and have a “race” to see which group and dress-up two of their members (one formal, one informal) the fastest…. attire must be correct to count!
Be sure the kids understand safety measures such as proper fitting of helmets as well! It is amazing how many PCers go around in helmets that don’t even come close to fitting!!!
The most important thing is to cover the details then make it FUN! Be sure you make it enjoyable for all ages as there is usually a pretty good mix from 6 year old D1s to 18 year old Bs….
Good Luck!
I had two other older PC girls be my life size barbie dolls when i taught this and the younger kids had to dress teh older girls in the attire with out talking or with their eyes clothes. It was really fun and memerable!
